Gravel Garden

The plants featured in this Beth Chatto inspired gravel garden have been selected to thrive in sunny conditions, with free draining soil and (once established) little watering.

The palette is largely blue and purple, with some zings of yellow from the Phlomis and Verbascum to give the scheme a lift. There is a contrast in flower forms, from buttons such the Echinops to the umbels of Verbena bonariensis.

The soft silvery foliage of plants like Stachys and Ballota chimes in with the bark of the Eucalyptus, whilst the Euphorbia bracts add some lime green contrast.

The grasses provide movement, and can be left over winter to give interest alongside many of the flower seed heads and evergreen foliage. Bulbs prolong the season adding early spring interest.
